Easy Topiaries

I love the sculptural look of topiaries in pots or the garden. My problem- I'm thrifty and don't like the usual price tag on them. So I decided to build my own. Here are my step-by-step directions to make this adorable little topiary.

  1. Pick a pot. Be sure that it is tall enough to bury the stem in.
  2. Choose your climbing plant. I went with a variegated english ivy. It has tiny, precious leaves. Be sure not to pick something that will out grow your pot.
  3. Next take a trip to Michaels or even Home Depot and purchase a 1/4"-1/2" dowel rod- they are very inexpensive maybe $.50-$1 depending on where you get them.
  4. Go to Target or any home decor store-or even Michaels (go to the floral dept.) and purchase decorative vase filler balls. I chose these wicker ones in two different sizes. They are a little pricy at $5 but they are cute. Also pick up some spray paint or craft paint to paint the dowel to match whatever forms you choose.
  5. Decide on how high you want your topiary and cut the dowel to size.
  6. Paint the dowel and hot glue the forms you chose, then plant your climber first and place the topiary last and waah la!!

All together this cost me about $10 (I already had the pot) a lot cheaper than Pikes! Be sure to water your little gem well and help it climb onto your forms if need be! Enjoy.
